WEDDING TRENDS: BRIDAL BOUQUET

Thursday 31 January 2013

Flowers and plants have been used in weddings since the beginning of time, as a way of showing love. The first use of wedding flowers dates back to ancient Greek times, the history of the bridal bouquet being quite old and long. In ancient Greece, flowers and plants were used to make a crown for the bride to wear on her head, being considered as gifts from nature.

The bridal bouquet consisted of garlands and wreaths worn on the head of the bride and groom. The garland of flowers was considered the symbol of love and happiness. Originally, the bridal bouquet and wreaths were created from plants and bulbs of garlic. It was said that plants and garlic had the magical power to ward off any evil spirits that could do any harm to the future couple. Each plant had its own meaning.
For example, dill is the herb of desire. When dill was combined with garlic in the bride’s bouquet, it was said that the bride would feel sexual desire for her husband only. Salvia was considered to be the plant of wisdom, and when it was combined with garlic to form the wedding bouquet, the bride would gain wisdom and learn what kindness is.

In some countries, the history of the bridal bouquet and of the role

that flowersBouquet played at weddings have remained unchanged, many of the old practices still being used today. In Germany, during the wedding ceremony, the bride and groom are holding candles in their hands, while flowers and ribbons are attached to the candles.
In India, the groom’s brother sprinkles flower petals over the couple at the end of the wedding ceremony, to help drive away evil spirits. In Sweden, bridesmaids are holding in their hands bouquets made of herbs and the groom carries thyme in his pockets to scare off winches. In Austria, brides wear wreaths of flowers over their veils.
Flowers have always been an important part of weddings. Over the time, people have used flowers to the wedding ceremony for various reasons, but using wedding bouquets remains a significant aspect of this special event.

At any rate, it is more effective to address such issues on a different forum than this blog.
